During our second summer vacation this year, we went to the wine and fruit growing region of South Tyrol. Besides vinyards, I also wanted to visit an eau de vie distillery which I had on my list for a long time. Alexander Ortler’s spirits won very high ratings in the Falstaff Spirits Trophy.
In 2020 I did a big apricot eau de vie bling tasting. So, it felt like the time was right for an update. This time I tried twelve different eau de vies. However, it was not a blind tasting this time, but nevertheless the results were interesting.
There is a long-lasting tradition here in Germany to distil gentian root. However, most of the time these spirits are associated with “cheap liquor” which is consumed in old taverns and beer halls.
