One More Cup – Maxbean Maxpower
I wanted to write about coffee for a long time now. Probably, if I had to choose one more hobby besides mixing drinks it would be brewing coffee. So, I am now taking the time to take a closer look at coffees from different roasters. Let us begin with the maxpower espresso from the Maxbean roasters in Ennepetal.
Before we get into the details about the coffee and the brewing process, let me quickly tell you about my set-up. I am using a Rocket Appartamento portafilter coffee machine in combination with a Eureka Mignon XL grinder. Apart from that I am using IMS Baristapro portafilters and shower sieve.
Dark espresso blend
The Maxbean maxpower is a blend of 70 % arabica and 30 % robusta. Fourty percent of the coffee comes from Brazil, 30 % from Guatemala and 30 % from India. Furthermore, the coffee beans are processed natural and washed. All in all, Maxbean uses six different coffee varieties in the blend: Bourbon, Caturra, Catuai, Mundo Novo, Tupi, and Rubi. I have used 17,5 g for the double shot with the grinder set around 3,0. This resulted in 30 ml for the single shot in 30 seconds.
Hint of tobacco
The resulting espresso had a stable medium sized crema. The first whiff reminded me of French Press coffee, but it also had notes of tobacco, vanilla and chocolate. In the taste, I discovered a hint of smoke together with typical dark chocolate flavours. Furthermore, the maxpower showed some vanilla and spice notes with just a hint of acidity. The aftertaste was long with some bitterness and almonds.
