Trick or Treaquila – Torquay
It is spooky season and this means “scary” cocktails! So, for a challenge on Facebook I came up with a seasonal Tequila Sour variation. It is not that scary, but there are fireworks!
Various movies inspired my Halloween drink with Casa Noble Tequila. However, I have to admit that I’m not a big horror movie fan – not at all, actually…. I got the name for my drink from the song “Torquay” by The Leftovers, which is featured in From Dusk Till Dawn (one of the few “horror movies” I can watch). The recipe is an adaptation of the ” Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique ” cocktail by Erick Castro, which in turn was inspired by the movie “Kill Bill”.
Sour with pumpkin spice
Basically, I took the ingredients of the “Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique” and extended it by adding lime juice and some agave syrup to make a sour. To keep it seasonal, I added some pumpkin spice and a little absinthe. Because what ingredient is more “scary” than absinthe? Of course, the cocktail then had to be served in a pumpkin-shaped drinking vessel.
2,25 cl Mr Black Coffee Liqueur
1,5 cl Punt e Mes
2 Dashes Duplais Verte Absinthe
3 cl Lime Juice
0,75 cl Agave Syrup
Shake – strain – Pumpkin mug over crushed ice;
Garnish: Lime Twist, dried Lemon & Lime Wheel, Brandied Cherry, Cinnamon, Fire; Song: The Leftovers – Torquay;
To dust cinnamon over the drink through a flame is, on the one hand, of course a nice show effect (be careful with fire and flammable materials!), but on the other hand, the pickled cherry tastes especially cinnamony. Otherwise, the “Torquay” tastes like an interesting, spicy Tequila Sour. The Mr. Black takes over the most prominent role next to the Tequila and of course the Pumpkin Spice. The Punt e Mes, stays discreetly in the background and, along with the sweet and sour base, forms the basic framework of the drink. Finally, some of the absinthe with its herbal notes is noticeable. Overall, the drink is very round and balanced – so it does not taste scary at all, but you do want a enjoyable cocktail afterall!
