Unbottled – Muster Gamlitz Gelber Muskateller
Here is a short review of a wine from a grape variety I enjoy very much. The yellow muscatel, one of the few aromatic grape varieties, from Muster Gamlitz, received a very high rating from wine critic Luca Maroni. So, I gave the Gelber Muskateller Reverenz a try.
For their “Reverenz” wines (soon they will be marked under the label “Illyr”) Muster Gamlitz use only the ripes grapes from the Mur river to the Koralpe mountains. The 2021 vintage had perfectly ripe grapes which were vinified in stainless steel tanks after the manual harvest. The wine spent eleven months on the yeast before bottling in July 2022. The yellow muscatel has a residual sweetness of 23,5 g / litre and an acidity level of 6,2 g / litre.
A cornucopia of exotic fruits
The bouquet of the Reverenz already shows a lot of exotic fruits – mainly lychees. Furthermore, it also shows some perfumed and floral flavours beyond that. In the taste, you will notice the residual sweetness, which greatly emphasises the exotic fruits of lychees and mangos. However, the acidity keeps some of the sweetness in stall. I enjoyed the wine very much. However, with a bit less sweetness I would have even loved it.
Food pairing cliché
I guess I do not have to mention that this wine goes extremely well with spicy Thai food. I know that this is a cliché pairing for wines with residual sweetness, but it just works! So, that is what we enjoyed with it and the wine was a real crowdpleaser. However, I also would have loved to pair it with lard-bread as well as some apples.
*The fact that I received a product reviewed in this article for free, did not – in any way – influence the rating of said product. The wine was provided by Muster Gamlitz.
