Dry January 2024 – Storm in a Teacup

A few years back, I would not have believed that there is a big market for non-alcoholic ‘spirits’. Yet, now you can find a great variety out there. However, I asked myself if you could come up with something similar at home. You can find the results and a delicious no-ABV drink below.

First, I absolutely know that the best you can come up with at home is flavoured water. Nevertheless, I wanted to make a non-alcoholic ‘rum’. Therefore, I combined banana chips, cacao nibs, cinnamon and cloves with hot water. For a bit of a ‘punch’ I also threw in some chili flakes. I let the mixture rest for one hour and filtered it afterwards.

Rooibos, passionfruit and spices

For a drink using the aromatic water, I went with a ‘virgin’ Hurricane variation. I combined fruity, green rooibos tea with the flavoured water, lime and homemade passionfruit syrup. Obviously, I had to serve the drink in a cup, because of its name.

Storm in a Teacup:

6 cl Aromatized Water (Cacao, Cinnamon, Chilis, Cloves, Bananachips)
3 cl Cold Samova Fruity Rooty Tea
3 cl Lime Juice
3 cl Homemade Passionfruit Syrup
Shake – strain – chilled Tea Cup over ice cubes;
Garnish: Dried Orange Wheel;
Song: Red Hot Chili Peppers – Storm in a Teacup;

The ‘Storm in a Teacup’ starts with a combination of lime and passionfruit. Afterwards, the ‘botanicals’ from the tea and the flavoured water show threw. The drink really needed a bit of extra passionfruit syrup to balance the amount of water in the recipe and to enhance the other flavours as well.
