The Drink That Started It All

I thought a while which cocktail I should mix first in our new apartment. While I am now big into Negronis and Manhattans, the drink that started the whole ‘craft’ cocktail thing for me was the Old-Fashioned!

While I used to mix Old-Fashioneds on regular basis, I am rarely doing that anymore. Not because I do not enjoy them, but most of the times my taste tends towards bitter or fortified wine when it comes to cocktails. Yet, the original recipe, carefully crafted with high-quality ingredients is just an excellent drink.

Going all out

Yes, I could have gone for a single barrel bourbon or even a rye whiskey this time. Yet, I was in the mood for something smooth and soothing after the stressful move. This is why, I went for the W.L. Weller 12-Year-Old which is excellent on its own, too. Apart from that, I went with the original recipe and not even messed around with the bitters.

Old-Fashioned:
View in: de en
6 cl W.L. Weller 12-Years-Old Bourbon
4 Dashes Angostura Bitters
0,75 cl Simple Syrup
1 Orange Peel
Stir – strain – chilled Cocktail glass over clear ice cube;
Garnish: Brandied Cherry
Song: Owl John – A Good Reason To Grow Old;

Yes, the next time, I will probably mess around with the recipe again. However, for the time being, it was just the right thing. The drink was smooth with just the right amount of bitters. This reminded me, what an excellent cocktail a well-crafted Old-Fashioned can be.
