A Christmassy Drink – Northern Lights
Just a quick recipe for St. Nick’s and the start of a few more festive cocktails here on the blog. In this case, I created the recipe for some tasty homemade pecan butter fat-washed bourbon.
Well, a pecan butter fat-washed bourbon might not be the most imaginative way for a holiday inspired cocktail. However, I had some pecans lying around and I really wanted to try this. First, I roasted the pecans in a pan without fat, then added the butter and a tiny dose of sugar. When the butter had melted and the mix cooled a bit, I poured it into the bourbon. Put everything into the freezer overnight and filter the next day. Here it is quite important to remove larger pieces through a coarser strainer first. Next run the mix through a cheese cloth and last through a coffee filter.
A pecan flavoured festive Whiskey Sour
For the final drink, I went for a Whiskey Sour variation. However, I added a few extra things, like the excellent apple strudel liqueur from Tinnauer. Apart from that, I incorporated some red wine, a mixture of festive bitters and last, but not least some Aronia cherry juice.
2,25 cl Tinnauer Apple Strudel Liqueur
2,25 cl Appassimento Red Wine
4 Dashes Homemade Aromatic Bitters
2 Dashes Dashfire Spiced Apple Bitters
3 cl Lemon Juice
1,5 cl Acerola Juice
2,25 cl Homemade Vanilla Syrup
Garnish:Christmassy decoration; Song: Bowerbirds – Northern Lights;
The “Northern Lights” starts with Whiskey Sour notes, but soon takes on a Christmas spice direction. You can taste the combination of red wine and apple strudel liqueur which in combination with the bitters reminds me of mulled wine. Obviously, the vanilla also works well here.
