Silvaner Sundays – Kraemer Silvaner 2017

Since we are staying at the Kraemer’s holiday flat for a few days next week, I thought I will do a special edition of Silvaner Sundays. Somewhere on the internet I found a few bottles of the 2017 vintage of Stephan’s Silvaner.
You do not find a lot of information about this wine. It comes from what I call Stephan’s second evolution in winemaking. Rumour has it that the grapes come from 18 to 50-year-old vines. After the manual harvest, the grapes were destemmed, spontaneous fermented in stainless steel and bottled without fining, filtration and with just a touch of SO2.
Reductive, with a touch of CO2

Freshly opned, the Kraemer Silvaner has a noticeable reductive note with flint and burned matchsticks, as well as a touch of CO2. Yet, they mellow with a bit of air-contact. As always with Stephan’s wines, you should open it at least one day before enjoying it. If you do, you are rewarded with a touch of primary fruit, but moreover with a lot of overripe apples, spices, herbs, grape kernels as well as some minerals notes.
Great, unconventional, refreshing
While this might sound like a bit exhausting, it is not. When you take your time with this Silvaner, it actually becomes very pleasant. This is the case with all of Stephan’s wines, you need to take your time and have to be open for a multidimensional wine experience. In this case, I did not pair the wine with food, but I can imagine it working very well with Tagliatelle with saffron and zucchini. You could even throw in some shrimps if you into that kind of thing…
