Artist’s Special – Teeling Stout Cask

Well, today is St. Patrick’s Day! While I do not have a green drink on hand, I at least can tell you about an Irish Whiskey. Teeling Whiskey is very dear to me, not only because I enjoy their bottlings very much, but also because we visited their distillery in Dublin in 2019. In this case, their famous Small Batch expression is finished in Galway Bay Brewery stout casks.

The limited whiskey brings an already existing collaboration full-circle: Galway Bay Brewery use Teeling Small Batch whiskey barrels to age their annually “200 Fathoms” stout. So, it is only a logical consequence that Teeling uses some of those stout seasoned barrels for the finishing of their Small Batch bottling. You will find all the details on the other Teeling bottlings and the great time we had at their distillery here. As always the Teeling Stout Cask is not chill-filtered.

Smooth dark fruits

The Teeling Sout cask beautifully shows typical Teeling Whiskey notes. It is smooth, but still intriguing with notes of grains and cereals. Additionally, the stout cask finish adds some darker fruit notes. It tends towards dried cherries and dried raspberries. Yet, the whisky is not overwhelmed by the beer barrel finish. Actually, I enjoyed it even more than the Small Batch bottling and I already loved this one.

Special Artist Special

The Artist Special is one of my favourite whiskey cocktails. I just love the combination of fruity red currant notes with the typical sherry and whisky notes. Luckily, my parents have red currants in their garden and I am always happy to take some off their hands. Usually, I am using Oloroso or Amontillado sherry in the cocktail. However, in this case I decided to add both sherries to mix things up a bit.

Artist’s Special:

4,5 cl Teeling Stout Cask
1,5 cl Fernando del Castillo Amontillado Sherry
1,5 cl Lustau Oloroso Sherry
2,25 cl Lemon Juice
2,25 cl Groseille Sirup
Shake – strain – chilled Cocktail glass;
Garnish: Lemon Twist;
Song: Villagers – Summer’s Song;

When using the Teeling Stout Cask in the Artist’s Special the result is very smooth with just enough whiskey notes to notice them. Apart from that, the two sherries even give the drink more depth. Of course, the red currant syrup brings sweetness to the drink, but it also adds a zesty freshness. If an Artist’s Special with Scotch is too bland for you this is the right and refined choice!
