Mizuwari Highball – Nikka Coffey Grain

Sometimes you just have to remix drinks you had too long ago. In this case, the Highball might seem a bit boring at first glance. However, the Mizuwari Highball is more than its list of ingredients might suggest. On top of that, this gave me the excuse to present the Nikka Coffey Grain Whisky to you.

Nikka produces their Coffee Grain Whiskey mainly from corn, which they ferment in one of 22 washbacks. Furthermore, as the name suggest, they continuously distil the mash on the Miyagikyo’s coffee stills. The stills were imported to Japan from Scotland in 1963 and 1966. In the end, the Nikka Coffey Grain is bottled at an ABV of 45 %.

Exotic fruits and a touch of Irish Whiskey

Though the Coffey Grain is “only” distilled from corn on a continuous still, the whiskey has a quite complex flavour profile. You can find some exotic fruits together with coconut shavings in the taste. All in all, the whisky reminded a bit of an Irish Whiskey with hints reminiscent of bourbon. However, I guess this is no surprise given the similarities in production.

Just whisky and soda water

There is no complicated story to this recipe. It is basically, just whisky, soda water, ice and a lemon twist. However, the Mizuwari (cutting with water) is a style of drinking whisky which is deeply rooted in Japanese culture. For me, the key to a great serving is the temperature and the use of sparkling water. Apart from obviously chilling your soda water, you can even put the whisky in the freezer. When sticking to the original serving you should also stir the whisky and the ice 13,5 times and then 3,5 times after adding the soda water.

I guess it is really true that you can still appreciate the flavour of the Japanese whisky when sipping the Mizuwari Highball. Obviously, it is watered down, but especially the Nikka Coffey Grain still delivers all of its flavours. This of course also means that the drink manages to be very refreshing. Additionally, the lemon twist adds the finishing touches to the Highball.
