Tropical Month ’24 – Three Dots and a Dash

Let us end Tropical Month 2024 with a rather unknown tropical classic. Donn the Beachcomber created this drink which is named after the morse code for the letter ‘V’. This variation from Martin Cate of Smuggler’s Cove uses Vieux Rhum Agricole as a base spirit instead of just ‘gold rum’.

Don the Beachcomber created this recipe during World War II, hence the reference to the ‘V’ for victory. The original recipe uses a mix of ‘golden’ and ‘Anejo’ rum. However, I do prefer the Suggler’s Cove version. Especially, since there are not a lot recipes out there which use aged Rhum Agricole as a base.

Blend your own rum

For the second rum in this recipe, Martin suggest an aged blended rum. I used the sherry barrel finished rum blend I did with some friends. In addition, the recipe calls for Falernum and Allspice Dram. For the latter, I used a homemade version. I know, that the original is flash blended with crushed ice and a few ice cubes. Yet, I decided to shake the drink long and hard and dirty dump into a glass.

4,5 cl Clement V.S.O.P Rhum
1,5 cl Südstadtboys R1.40 Rum
0,75 cl Von Have Golden Falernum
<0,75 cl Homemade Allspice Dram
1 Dash Angostura Bitters
1,5 cl Orange Juice
1,5 cl Lime Juice
1,5 cl Honey Syrup
Shake with ice cubes hard – fill – tropical longdrink glass;
Garnish: Orange Twist;
Song: Roots Manuva – Join the Dots;

Yes, Don Beachcomber’s Mai Tai is the more famous and maybe even better than the Three Dots and a Dash. Yet, I do prefer it over the original Zombie. The combination of the rum with the two liqueurs works extremely well. I did reduce the amount of Allspice Dram a bit. All in all, the combination is very tasty.
