Negroni Week 2024 – Mandarine Negroni

This post falls under the “Remixed!” category, because the recipe comes from Dennis Stein of Le Lion, Hamburg. They are selling a barrel aged version of it during Negroni Week. So, if you are in Hamburg check it out.

Joerg Meyer owner of the Le Lion has a great new newsletter called 7cl Business. He wrote about their barrel aged Negroni version for this year’s Negroni Week. This gave me the idea to check the original recipe out.

A few substitutes

Well, I did not have any of the original ingredients on hand, except for the Italian red bitter. Yet, I had similar ones which I guess work quite well, too. Instead of Rutte Dutch Gin, I used Citadelle Juniper Decadence and instead of Berto Bianco vermouth, I went for the Goelles Alfred Semi-Dry. Last but not least, I replaced the Mandarine Napoleon with the mandarin liqueur from Gin Eva.

Mandarine Negroni:
View in: de en
3 cl Gin
3 cl Bianco Vermouth
2 cl Italian Red Bitter
1 cl Mandarine Liqueur
Stir – strain – chilled Double Old-Fashioned glass over ice cube;
Garnish: Large Orange Twist;
Song: Rainbow Kitten Surprise – Moody Orange;

Although, the drink tasted different from the original with all the replacements, it is easy to see why the drink is a perfect fit for Negroni Week. The Mandarine Negroni starts like a usual Negroni. Yet, the mandarine soon takes over, but does not overwhelm the taste. All in all, it is a great drink even for people who do not especially like Negronis.
