Remixed! – From Soil to Smoke
Matthias and I not only share a first name, but also a passion for cocktails and spirits! Naturally, I had to remix one of his drinks. While it took me some time to find the perfect drink to showcase Matthias’ drink style, I am very happy with my choice. The From Soil to Smoke is just the perfect tropical sipper!
The Plantation Trinidad 8 Years comes from the Trinidad Distillers Limited distillery. It spends eight years in ex-bourbon casks in the Caribbean and another year in Ferrand casks in France. The rum is bottled with 12 g / litre sugar and an alcohol level of 42 %.
Classic column still notes
As you might imagine this rum comes off as being quite smooth. You can find some sugarcane and molasses notes in the taste. Furthermore, there is some sweetness and a little spice in the taste. In the aftertaste, you can find some grassy and also a whiff of exotic fruits.
A Mai Tai variation
Matthias created the From Soil to Smoke way back in 2019 as a Banana and Cacao Mai Tai, but with mellower rum notes. He mentions that the rum should be molasses based, column distilled and aged well. That is why I went for the Plantation Trinidad 8 Years. Definitely not just because it was the only column still rum in my liqueur cabinet…
1,5 cl Tempus Fugit Crème de Cacao
1 cl Giffard Banana Liqueur
3 Dashes Angostura Bitters
3 cl Lime Juice
1 cl Meneau Orgeat
Garnish: Lime Twist;
Song: London Grammer – Californian Soil;
As Matthias already described the drink, the From Soil to Smoke starts similar to a Mai Tai. Yet, the cacao flavour does clearly dominate the drink. The banana liqueur lingers on somewhere in the back, while the rum contributes to the overall drinking experience.
*The fact that I received a product reviewed in this article for free, did not – in any way – influence the rating of said product. The rum was provided by Ferrand Germany.
