St. Patrick’s Day 2025 – Tipperary

I know, Chartreuse can be hard to come by these days. Nevertheless, is the Tipperary cocktail one of my favourites. On top of that, the drink is a true classic first mentioned in 1916. Hugo R. Ensslin published the drink in his “Recipes for Mixed Drinks” book.
Instead of Hugo R. Ensslin’s recipe with equal parts, I went for the recipe published at Tipperary. It was based on Harry MacElhone’s 1922 recipe published in the “ABC of Mixing Cocktails”. It was additionally improved by the team at the Dead Rabbit bar.

3 cl Sweet Vermouth Mix**
1,5 cl Chartreuse 1605
Stir – strain – chilled Cocktail glass;
Garnish: Orange Twist;
Song: John McCormack – It’s a Long Way to Tipperary;
**Mix 50 % Mancino Vermouth Rosso, 40 % Yzaguierre Reserve and 10 % Mancino Chinato.

The Chartreuse clearly dominates the drink, but the other elements also shine. Yes, this is quite the spirit-forward drink, but at the same time it comes over smoother than your regular Bijou cocktail.
