Negroni Week 2025 – Cliché

Basically, I built this Negroni variation around the glass from Lobmeyr which just seemed perfect for a straight up serve. I chose the name of a random song which came up when I typed “grapefruit” into Apple Music. Yet, it seem perfect, because by know every iteration of the original just seems like a big cliché.
For the drink itself I just got the idea to add some grapefruit eau de vie to the classic Negroni. I wanted to do this for ages now. Of course, I used the excellent one from my good friend Manuel Engel. Apart from that, I kept the basic equal parts. However, I used a part of my rest of Beefeater Crown Jewel (1st reintroduction) I have – Yes, I felt hedonistic today. I cannot tell you why, but a dash of five pepper essence just felt right here.

0,75 cl Engel Grapefruit Eau de Vie
3 cl Italian Red Bitter
3 cl Sweet Vermouth Blend
Stir – strain – chilled cocktail glass;
Garnish: Orange Twist;
Song: James Vincent McMorrow – Cliché;
As I already expected, the Lobmeyr No. 297 Ident IV is just the perfect glass for sipping spirit-forward cocktails! The thin glass and the angle of the rim are just excellent. Apart from that, it also helps when the cocktail you are serving in the glass is tasty, too. The grapefruit flavours blend perfectly with the gin and bitter. The peppery flavours linger on in the back and add to the complexity. The drink indeed has a pronounced sweetness, but it helps balancing the more powerful ingredients in there. All in all, a great choice for Negroni Week.
