Once Again – Scheibel Blackcurrant Rum

I do enjoy the spritis from Scheibel’s ‘Alte Zeit’ range quite much. Yet, there liqueurs are where they really shine! In this case, I came up with a sparkling wine cocktail using their whisky as well as the new Blackcurrant Rum.

For the production of their Blackcurrant Rum, Scheibel use blackcurrant eau de vie, cassis juice, rum, extract from real vanilla beans and sugar. In the end, the liqueur is bottled at an ABV of 35 % in a heavy 0,7 l decanter bottle.

This might come as a bit of a surprise, but the Scheibel Blackcurrant Rum, really does taste like blackcurrants! Joking aside, the liqueur has just layers of layers of cassis flavour. What does come as a surprise is that the rum only lingers on in the back. Here the name is a bit misleading. Yet, the Blackcurrant Rum still is the best cassis liqueur I have tasted so far!

Royal Whisky Sour

For a drink, I wanted to combine the liqueur with whisky and citrus. Yet, I thought a bit of sparkling wine could not hurt. However, I went with the alcohol-free C. Bratbirne from Joerg Geiger. Obviously, you could also use its alcoholic version.

Once Again:

3 cl Scheibel Emill Kraftwerk Whisky
1,5 cl Scheibel Blackcurrant Rum
2,25 cl Lemon Juice
1 Bsp. Giffard Gomme Syrup
Top off with Joerg Geiger C. Bratbirne / alcoholfree
Shake – strain – chilled Champagne glass – top off;
Garnish: Dried Orange Wheel (Orange Twist);
Song: Old Sea Brigade – Once Again;

The combination of blackcurrant with the sparkling pear wine works very well. The whisky takes a few seconds to hit your palate, but also fits in nicely. Obviously, when you use the alcoholfree Bratbirne you get a lighter drink. Yet, topping the drink off the alcoholic version results in a ‘warmer’ drinking sensation.
