Someday Now – Aluna Coconut
When it comes to coconut rum, I am very sceptical. A lot of the times those flavoured rums taste artificial and way too sweet. However, the Aluna Coconut set out to be different. The folks behind the rum wanted to create a not too sweet rum with natural coconut flavour. Since, it is the first drink which comes to my mind when thinking about coconut rum, I set out to make a high-quality Bahama Mama variation. I guess this also is a nice conclusion of this month’s Tropical Month!
Three coconut fans had the idea for the Aluna Coconut when they realized that there was no high-quality coconut rum available on the market. For the Aluna they use roasted coconuts which are macerated and blended with three different rums. The first one comes from Guatemala and the pressed sugarcane juice is fermented with yeasts from the pineapple plant. The other two rums come from the Caribbean and the mixture is then blended with sustainably sourced coconut water. In the end, the coconut rum has an ABV of 37,5 %.
Pure coconut flavour
What I can tell you straight away is that the Aluna Coconut is the best coconut rum I have tried so far. You can taste pure coconut flavour, roasted coconut notes reminiscent of milk chocolate and some coconut nut water notes. Apart from that, you get a slight rum note which also carries some menthol notes. I guess for sipping the coconut rum neat it could be a bit smoother, but I do not mind the additional strength for mixing.
High quality Bahama Mama
For the “Someday Now” I started off with the basic Bahama Mama recipe I got from Cocktailbart. This time I did not stray too far from the original and just replaced the combination of unaged rum, Jamaican rum and coconut rum, with the Aluna Coconut and the excellent Veritas Rum. However, it just felt more fitting to use lime instead of lemon juice. Since, I had one lying around anyway, I also used blood orange juice. I guess my recipe heavily relies on high-quality grenadine, because I adjusted the sweet and sour mix with it.
3 cl Veritas Rum
3 Dashes Seventh Sense Tiki Bitters
3 cl Lime Juice
4,5 cl Blood Orange Juice
4,5 cl Pineapple Juice
1,5 cl d’Arbo Grenadine
Garnish: Dried Dragon Fruit Wheel;
Song: Local Natives – Someady Now;
I guess this is a somehow atypical drink for me. It does not use excessive amounts of overproof spirits and includes three different juices. Nevertheless, the resulting cocktail really is tasty and very pleasant to sip. Sure, this is not the right choice for the fans of ester laden Mai Tais, but if you are up for a light tropical drink every once in a while, this is the right choice for you!
