One Bottle One Drink – Bum Bum Bum

When I tried the La Boum a view articles ago, I instantly knew that I had to come up with my own twist. Luckily, I just have had an excellent smoothie made from Franconian melons and mint. Therefore, I just switched out the watermelon juice and replaced the Cachaca with some overproof Jamaican rum. With those little changes, the resulting drink turned out a bit different from the original.

Well, the concept of using melons for summery drinks is not quite new. Nevertheless, through Swetlana Holz’s La Boum they now seem to have a little revival. You quickly can see how intriguing the combination of Cachaca and melons are when you look at the high number of Drinkstagrammers who posted about the drink. As mentioned above, I wanted to create my own version of the drink.

Jamaican esters notes

So, I guess the obvious thing to do was to replace the Cachaca with another spirit. I guess the white Jamaican rum was quite the obvious choice. On top of that, I made a Galia melon smoothie with a few sprigs mint and replaced the watermelon juice with it. Apart from that, I also used the Bittermen’s Burlesque Bitters, but kept the original proportions of the recipe.

Bum Bum Bum:
View in: de en
4,5 cl Rum Fire
1 Dash Bittermen’s Burlesque Bitters
4,5 cl Galia Melon and Mint Purée
3 cl Lime Juice
2 cl Simple Syrup
Shake – strain – chilled Double Old-Fashioned glass over ice cubes;
Garnish: Mint Sprigs;
Song: Cass McCombs – Bum Bum Bum;

Obviously, the drink tastes quite different from the La Boum. The first thing you will notice are the powerful ester notes. Next, the mint comes into play and adds more refreshing flavours. The melon and the lime form a great backbone of the “Bum Bum Bum”. All in all, the drink is less “easy-going”, but still quite suitable for hot summer days.
