Writer’s Minor Holiday – Jameson Crested
If you are lucky enough, your best-man excels at planning your bachelor party and you find yourself on a surprise trip to Dublin. Obviously, we had to hit all the famous drinking spots. One of the best experiences of the trip was the visit the old Jameson Distillery. Therefore, I also had to buy a bottle of the whiskey we enjoyed best there!
Jameson Whiskey long has its home in south Ireland in Cork. However, the tour at the former Jameson Distillery in Dublin still is worth your money. Our favourite whiskey was the Jameson Crested. The Crested once had an age statement, but now supposedly consists of eight to fifteen-year-old whiskey. The mash is tripled distilled and then aged in ex-shery and ex-bourbon casks with a bigger portion of the blend being sherry casks.
Smooth, but not boring
Once you fell for Irish Whiskey, you can appreciate the mellow taste and subtle nuances. The Crested has all the typical smooth Irish Whiskey flavour with a noticeable grain whiskey part, but also delivers floral and dried fruit notes. Being a fan of sherry casks whiskies, this was right up my alley. All in all, you get a great Irish Whiskey which is definitely more complex as the Jameson Original for an excellent price point.
A Bobby Burns variation
Again, I used a recipe which I wrote down quite a long time ago. I guess it was in 2019 after our trip to Ireland. Basically, the drink is a Bobby Burns variation which itself is a Rob Roy version. However, I also used sloe gin in the recipe and omitted the bitters.
0,75 cl Ascaim Sloe Gin
0,75 cl Benedictine
3 cl Yzaguierre Reserve Vermouth
Garnish: Lemon Twist;
Song: Calexico – Writer’s Minor Holiday;
The “Writer’s Minor Holiday” starts with notes reminiscent of a Rob Roy. However, the sloe gin soon adds some intriguing fruit notes. Additionally, the Benedictine contributes a certain herbal flavour to the drink which works perfectly with the sweet Spanish vermouth.
