10th Anniversary – The Other Way

This is the first drink I ever posted to Augustine-Bar.de. Obviously, I had to revisit it for the 10th anniversary of my blog. If you take part in the giveaway on Instagram, you have the chance to remix it, too.

I created the The Other Way when I was a bartender during my studies. When I helped cleaning the basement of the bar, I discovered a bunch of homemade chestnut blossom syrup. So, my former boss gave me the challenge to come up with a drink using it. In the end, I used Jamaica rum, vanilla liqueur, lime, black pepper and cloudy apple juice.

Slightly updated version

Below you will find the original recipe. However, I updated the recipe slightly to fit my changed taste. For the rum I currently prefer to use the Kill Devil Navy Style. Instead of homemade vanilla liqueur I went for the Giffard Vanilla de Madagascar.

The Other Way: – Updated Version
View in: de en
4,5 cl Kill Devil Navy Style Rum
1 cl Giffard Vanilla de Madagascar Liqueur
2 cl Chestnut Blossom Syrup
0,75 cl Lime Juice
3 Dashes Five Pepper Essence**
Top off with Cloudy Apple Juice
Stir all ingredients – strain – Double Old-Fashioned glass over ice cubes;
Garnish: Grated Black Pepper – Dried Lime Wheel;
Song: Cody ChestnuTT – Don’t Wanna Go The Other Way;

**Grate Andaliman, Malaguetta, black, green and white pepper in a mortar (go easy on the white pepper) – warm infuse in 96 % ABV alcohol for three days – filter and bottle in a dropper bottle.

I do not really recall why I thought that it is necessary to shake the original drink. The stirred version works perfectly. On top of that, the pepper essence has the benefit that you can better control the pepper flavour. All in all, I still like the ‘The Other Way’ very much and still am proud that it was the drink of the month at the bar I worked.

As I mentioned in my previous post: If you take part in my anniversary raffle you have the chance to win three great spirit packages.
