Dry January – La Llorona

I really did managed to come up with a non-alcoholic recipe without using caffein for a change. All in all, the different components all have an Arabic touch and just fell into place. It all started with sumac syrup.

I combined the very fruity syrup with a strongly mint tea. Obviously, the drink needed a bit of acidity. Furthermore, I added a bit of preserved lemon. In the end, I topped everything up with a splash of soda water.

La Llorona:

8 cl Cold Peppermint Tea
2,25 cl Lemon Super Juice
2,25 cl Sumac Syrup*
1 Bsp. Preserved Lemon
Top off with Soda Water
Shake – strain – chilled Highball glass over ice cubes;
Garnish: No garnish;
Song: Beirut – La Llorona;

*Bring 100 g of light muscovado sugar with 50 ml water to a boil – turn down the heat – add two teaspoons of organic sumac powder to the pan – let simmer for a few minutes – strain through a coffee filter – bottle in clean bottle;

The ‘La Llorona’ starts with a fruity and herbal mix. You can also taste a slight acidity from the sumac as well as from the lemon juice. Nevertheless, the drink is quite well balanced. The preserved lemon just adds some more lemon peel flavours in combination with the slightest hint of acidity. This drink really makes you not miss the booze at all!
