Cosmo – Engel Lemon Eau de Vie

Yes, I featured quite a lot of different citrus eau de vies lately. Yet, there is room for just one more. Especially, when it gives me the excuse to revisit a drink I used to make quite often in the bar. Basically, it is a Cosmopolitan with lemon eau de vie.
Manuel Engel is passionate about finding unique citrus fruits and distilling them. So, it is no surprise that I already reviewed many of his creations. Lemons from the Amalfi coast form the base for his second lemon eau de vie. The Limoneta Annuziata grows the lemon variety called Sfusato Amalfitano.
Tasty and spicy lemons

The Amalfi eau de vie starts with clear lemon notes. I got freshly grated lemon zest, with a hint of white pith. Yet, there is also a bit of spiciness in the taste. After a little while it reminded me of coriander seeds. In th end, there a bit of hot spices in there.
Just a Cosmopolitan riff
I decided to make a drink with Manuel’s Amalfi lemon eau de vie based on a Cosmopolitan variation from the bar where I worked. Basically, we replaced the citrus vodka with lemon eau de vie and used it in a classic sour recipe. The d’Arbo Cowberry syrup served as a sweetener in the mix. I stuck with this basic recipe, but adjusted the quantities slightly to suit the spirits I am using here.

1,5 cl Satoshi Curacao
3 cl Lime Juice
2,25 cl d’Arbo Cowberry Syrup
Garnish: Orange Twist (no drop)
Song: Yellow Ostrich – Shades;
The Cosmo variation begins with the familiar combination of lemon and red astringent berries. However, the eau de vie and orange curaçao give it more depth. On top of that, the drink also has a certain spiciness to it. It is therefore a great summer refresher.

*The fact that I received a product reviewed in this article for free, did not – in any way – influence the rating of said product. I received the eau de vie for free from Engel Naturbrennerei.
