Tropical Month – Hurricane Variation

I guess I am not the first to throw in a little passion fruit liqueur into a Hurricane cocktail. However, I also took the chance and am presenting the Planteray Mr Fogg Navy Rum to you. This rum just seemed as the perfect fit in this recipe.

The whole story of the Mr. Fogg Rum was written down by Matt Pietrek who embarked on this journey with Ferrand’s Alexandre Gabriel. In the end, the rum consists of 34 % rum from Barbados (West Indies Rum Distillery), 35 % Trinidad (Trinidad Distillers Ltd), 20 % Guyana rum (Diamond Distillery), 6 % Mauritian rum (Saint Aubin) and 5 % Jamaica rum distilled at the Long Pond and Clarendon distilleries. After ageing in ex-bourbon barrels in their countries of origin, they are transported to France where they spend more time in used oak barrels as well as open wooden vats. In the end, the rum has an ABV of 55,7 % as well as an dosage of 4,8 g / l.

Intense, but kept in check

The rum starts with a pronounced ‘Jamaica rum’ flavour. Yet, you can also notice a lot of spices like cloves, nutmeg as well as vanilla pods. The sweetness is noticeable, but rather well balanced by the other flavours as well as the alcohol. I quite enjoyed the rum, especially at this price point. Furthermore, the rum should work quite well in cocktails.

Like a Hurricane

For this Hurricane variation I combined the Mr. Fogg Rum with some overproof rum. As mentioned before, the main addition came in the form of passion fruit liqueur, that’s it!

Hurricane – Variation:
View in: de en
4 cl Planteray Mr. Fog Navy Rum No. 2
0,75 cl Planteray O.F.T.D. Rum
1,5 cl Chinola Passionfruit Liqueur
4,5 cl Lime Juice
3 cl Liber & Co. Passionfruit Syrup
Shake – dirty dump – chilled Tropical mug;
Garnish: Spend Lime Shell – Burning Orange Oil;
Song: Bob Dylan – Like a Rolling Stone;

What can I tell you, the cocktail tastes like a Hurricane. Is it a tasty one? It most certainly is! Is it the most complex drink out there? Definitely not. Yet, the cocktail delivers everything you might expect from this tropical classic.

*The fact that I received a product reviewed in this article for free, did not – in any way – influence the rating of said product. I received the rum for free from Ferrand Spirits.
