Dild Tonic – Aalborg Dild Akvavit

It has been years ago that I first read about aquavit which uses dill as an ingredient. Now that I got my hands on a bottle I was very curious to try it. It does not really come as a surprise that the suggested serve with a tonic water works very well.

The Aalborg Dild Aqkavit uses dill as well as citrus peel as botanicals. It was created to accompany fish and shellfish and was relaunched in 2010. It is bottled at an ABV of 38 %.

Dill

Obviously, the first thing you notice is a clear cut dill flavour. Apart from that there lingers a bit of caraway seed in the back, before lemon and a touch of menthol take over. I also found a certain dill seed flavour in the aroma and taste.

Refreshing highball

The Dild & Tonic is as simple a highball as it can get. Basically, you just take our average Gin & Tonic and swap out the gin for the aquavit. I did not have fresh dill on hand, but a lemon twist also works excellent as a garnish here.

This highball is as refreshing as it gets! While the juniper in a regular Gin & Tonic adds a touch of heavier essential oils, the Dild Aqkavit results in a very clean taste. This makes this drink perfect for food-pairings with fish or seafood, but also very suitable for hot summer days!

*The fact that I received a product reviewed in this article for free, did not – in any way – influence the rating of said product. I received the aquavit for free from Aalborg.
