Unbottled – Konni & Evi Alte Terrassen

We arrived at the Saale-Unstruth region. This is only one of two Eastern German wine regions – we will get to the second one in the next article. To be honest, there was actually no question on whether to present a wine from Konni & Evi homepage. Simply put they are the only high quality, sustainable vineyard I know in that region.
Nevertheless, this wine is special in a few ways. Firstly, it is the only mixed lot bottling in this series. Specifically, the Alte Terrassen is a mix of Gutedel and Silvaner from the Schweigenberg vineyard. Furthermore, the wine is produced according to biodynamic principles and ages under a layer of yeast.

In short, this is probably the wine that surprised me the most in this whole series. I knew it would be good, but I wasn’t prepared for just how good it actually is. Yes, I also tried the Alte Terrassen at the start of my summer holiday. Nevertheless, I can’t think of any criticism. The colour is beautiful and the flavour is fresh and mineral. The phenols are present, but so well integrated that they result in a never-ending drinking flow… The best part is, that the wine just keeps on getting better the longer it is open.
