Halloween 2026 – Orange Blood

When it comes to holiday-themed cocktails, I usually come underprepared. This time, I threw some ingredients together the day before Halloween and poured the mixture into a pumpkin-shaped mug.
I opted for ‘spooky’ ingredients such as mezcal and Blutwurz. This local herbal liqueur from southern Bavaria was provided by my good friend Maunel Engel. To finish, I added cinnamon eau de vie and quince jelly. I also thought that adding a few drops of Scrappy’s Firewater Tincture could not hur.
A little Blutwurz

0,75 cl Sammerhof Cinnamon Eau de Vie
0,75 cl Engel Naturbrennerei Blutwurz
6 Drops Scrappy’s Firewater Tincture
1,5 cl Lemon Juice
1,5 cl Lime Juice
1 Bsp. Simple Syrup
Shake – strain – chilled Halloween mug over ice cubes;
Garnish: Grated Nutmeg;
Song: MT Joy – Orange Blood;

Interestingly enough, the other ingredients somewhat cancel out the smokiness of the mezcal. You can still detect it, but a powerful cinnamon and slightly earthy note of the Blutwurz overpower it. However, the agave flavour still shines through. Towards the aftertaste, a sweet and sour mix with a honey-like sweetness from the quince becomes noticeable. Finally, the chilli notes should only linger in the background.
*The fact that I received a product reviewed in this article for free, did not – in any way – influence the rating of said product. I received the Blutwurz for free from Naturbrennerei Engel.
