One Bottle One Drink – Blue Splinter View

While I spend some time experimenting with room-temperature cocktails, I never thought about replacing the water / ice in a cocktail. Nevertheless, for this month’s Home Bar Awards challenge “Hell No H2O” I needed to come up with a replacement for it. So, I took a drink I wanted to mix for almost half a year and changed the water in the ice cubes for something different.

Well, at first I thought the June challenge of 2021’s Home Bar Awards was about not-chilled cocktails. Yet, the whole thing was more about replacing your water with something different. In my case, I went for blueberry iced tea. I simply filled a high-quality bottled blueberry iced tea into an ice cube tray and put it in the freezer. Apart from that, I am also experimenting with frozen coconut water, but that is something for another post.

Blueberry, caraway and ginger

For the cocktail, I aimed for a Mule style drink using blueberry infused aquavit I had from February’s Home Bar Awards challenge. Apart from that, I added another caraway seed flavoured liquor the Faude Doppelkümmel. Add a bit of lime, the blueberry iced tea ice cubes as well as ginger beer and you have yourself a deep purple / burgundy coloured refresher.

4,5 cl Blueberry Infused Aquavit
1,5 cl Faude Doppelkümmel
2,25 cl Lime Juice
Top off with Fever Tree Ginger Beer
Built – Moscow Mule glass / mug over blueberry iced tea ice cubes – top off;
Garnish: Lime Twist (no drop);
Song: Me And My Drummer – Blue Splinter View;

When you are sipping the “Blue Splinter View” you first taste the ginger beer. After a short while, the caraway seed notes of the aquavit and the kummel become noticeable. Next, the blueberry notes of the ice tea and the aquavit take over, before leading into a finish reminiscent of black tea. Even though the Highball has more “Nordic” flavours, it still is very refreshing. Furthermore, I especially enjoyed the combination of aquavit and black tea notes.
