Evolution – Cinecane Popcorn Rum

Flavoured rums are a thing for a while now, so it is no wonder that also some crazy ones pop up. In this case, we are reviewing the Cinecane Popcorn Rum. While that immediately evokes the association with cinema and therefore cola, I decided to go in a dessert cocktail style drink.

Tastillery created the Cincane Rum to recreate the taste of the cinema. Therefore, they use 12-year-old Barbados rum and redistill it with buttered popcorn. Afterwards, they also fat-wash the rum with butter and popcorn. All in all, the Cinecane is bottled at 41,2 % ABV.

Roasted flavours and hazelnuts

The Cinecane starts with what you expect, some popcorn and buttery notes. On top of that, I noticed a certain hazelnut note reminding me of hazelnut eau de vie. Additionally, you can taste quite a lot of sweetness and some vanilla as well as rum notes.

Based on the Vienna In Ashes

My good friend at Cocktailbart already made great drinks using the Cinecane Rum. However, through a suggestion from my wife to combine the popcorn rum with chocolate, I wanted to take it in a different direction. So, I took inspiration from the Vienna In Ashes and wanted to create an After Dinner cocktail.

Evolution:
View in: de en
3 cl Cinecane Rum
2,25 cl Tempus Fugit Creme de Cacao
1,5 cl Ardbeg Wee Beastie Islay Single Malt
2 Dashes Aromatic Bitters Mix*
Stir – strain – Double Old-Fashioned glass with ice ball;
Garnish: Dried Bergamot Peel;
Song: The Cinematic Orchestra – Evolution (feat. Fontella Bass);

*Mix 50 % Angostura Bitters and 50 % The Bitter Truth Aromatic Bitters – bottle in clean dripper bottle

The “Evolution” drink starts off with a beautiful combination of hazelnut and cacao. Next, the smokiness from the Ardbeg shows through before a hint of popcorn comes to the front of the taste. Apart from that, the mouthfeel of the drink can just be described as “lavish”. In the end, I enjoyed the cocktail quite much, because the sweet flavours really worked well together.

*The fact that I received a product reviewed in this article for free, did not – in any way – influence the rating of said product. The rum was provided by Tastillery.
