Shake me Down – Widow Jane 10 Years

On to the next drink in this little series on American Whiskey cocktails: This one features the Widow Jane Bourbon and I took inspiration from the classic Smash recipe. To be honest, I did not stray from the beaten path that far with this.

When comparing the whiskies during our American Whiskey tasting, I especially enjoyed the aged notes of the Widow Jane 10-years Bourbon. On top of that, the slight peppermint flavour in the Widow Jane’s taste, made me crave a Smash. So, it came in handy that my spearmint survived the winter and still thrives.

Some citrus and some bitter

Despite the obvious mint and the sweet and sour mix, I wanted to underline and compliment the notes of the bourbon. Therefore, I added a bit of pink grapefruit liqueur, because it just works wonders with all sort of spirits. Furthermore, I was looking for complementary bitters and the flavours of citrus and chamomile from the Boston Bittahs seemed like a perfect match.

Shake me Down:
View in: de en
4,5 cl Widow Jane 10 Years Bourbon
1,5 cl Giffard Pamplemousse Liqueur
2 Dashes Bittermen’s Boston Bittahs
3 cl Lemon Juice
2 cl Simple Syrup
2 Sprigs Spearmint
Shake – double strain – chilled Double Old-Fashioned glass over ice;
Garnish: Mint Sprig;
Song: Cage the Elephant – Shake me Down;

As it turns out, the Widow Jane really works wonders in a Whiskey Smash style drink. You can taste enough bourbon notes, but the other ingredients especially the mint, shine through nicely. Apart from that, the grapefruit liqueur binds everything together and the bitters bring nice accents to the mix. All in all, this was a very refreshing summer drink!
