One Bottle One Drink – Pumpernickel

After visiting Amor Y Amargo, I had a really deep craving for Amaro cocktails. So, when I found Sother Teague’s Pumpernickel cocktail and I also had all the ingredients on hand. I just could not wait to restir it.

There actually are three different versions out there for the Pumpernickel cocktail. One calls for bourbon, Ramazotti and two dashes Angostura Bitters. The other one, uses rye instead of bourbon in combination with seven dashes bitters. While the third, substitutes Ramazotti with Luxardo’s Amaro Abano.

The second recipe it is!

I went for the second version which also seems the most popular one. However, I used Pikesville Rye and adjusted the amount accordingly. Apart from that, I kept everything original. Furthermore, I also order the Luxardo Amaro so that I can try the other versions as well.

Pumpernickel:

3 cl Pikesville Rye
2,25 cl Ramazotti Amaro
1,5 cl Punt e Mes
7 Dashes Angostura Bitters
Stir – strain – chilled Cocktail glass;
Garnish:Lemon Twist;
Song: Foster the People – Life on the Nickel;

The drink starts with clear Manhattan notes. However, the Ramazotti quickly kicks in and takes the drink in a darker direction. This is why the drink excellently works during the darker days of the year. Obviously, the bitters also shine through, but are also well integrated.
