Redwings – Brocktober 2022

Every October, Brockman’s Gin proclaims Brocktober! This means that for every Brocktail sold 1 € is donated to aid German flood victims. On top of that, it is also a cocktail challenge and for each like Brockman’s donates 10 cents. Here is my entry which I based on red liquorice sweets from Denmark.

Actually, my wife had the idea to base my cocktail with Brockman’s Gin on red liquorice. Although she is not a big liquorice fan in contrast to me. So, I set to work and came up with a rather complex concoction with a beautiful colour.

Red, red, clear, clear

Obviously, the base had to be Brockman’s Gin, but I also added a healthy dose of Italian Bitter liqueur to underline those fennel and anise notes. The rest of the liquorice taste came from the excellent and slightly salty Hoos Salmiaki. Furthermore, I emphasised the berry flavours of the gin with raspberry syrup. To keep the colour, I went for the clear Supasawa instead of citrus, but lime juice will also work. There only was one choice for the bitters here – Bittemen’s Spiced Cranberry bitters.

Redwings:

3 cl Brockman’s Gin
3 cl Del Professore Bitter
3 cl Hoos Salmiakki Salmiac Liqueur
3 cl Supasawa
1,5 cl Organic Raspberry Syrup
2 Dashes Bittermen’s Spiced Cranberry Bitterrs
Shake – strain – chilled Cocktail glass;
Garnish: Lakrids by Bülow – 3 – Red Liquorice;
Song: Guillemots – Redwings;

The drink really reminded me of the red liquorice from Bülow! You first get a whole bunch of berry notes. Soon afterwards, slight anise and fennel notes and a slight salinity kick in. However, the drink does not overwhelm with too much liquorice flavour. Similar to the sweets, this also can be enjoyed by people who do not like liquorice!
