Toronto Cocktail – Tempus Fugit Fernet
Until now, my favourite cocktail using Fernet was the Hanky Panky. While this still is a great one, a “new” contender arose – The Toronto Cocktail. Since I had a new Fernet on hand, I thought I would give it a try!
The Tempus Fugit Fernet del Frate is among the best Fernets out there. Tempus Fugit pays homage to a Frate Angelico Fernet which supposedly created herbal elixirs. There are a lot of botanicals in Fernet like aloe, anise, angelica, gentian, mint, myrhh, quinquina and saffron. In the end, the Fernet del Frate is bottled at 44 % ABV.
Fernet and rye harmony
Well, I could give you my tasting notes on the Fernet, but in summary it is extremely bitter and therefore no fun to taste on its own. Things are completely different in the cocktail however. I went for the WhistlePig Piggy Back Rye, because the spirit itself comes from the Alberta Distillery in Canada.
0,75 cl Tempus Fugit Fernet del Frate
0,75 cl Simple Syrups
Stir – strain – chilled Cocktail glass;
Garnish: Lemon Twist; Song: James Blake – I Am Sold;
The Toronto Cocktail really shows the beautiful side of the Fernet and of Amaros. The drink is very balanced with clear eucalyptus and herbal notes. The rye really balances out the bitter notes and also works great here. I guess I really have a second favourite Fernet cocktail now!
