Tropical Month 2024 – AB Rum Punch
It might be an underrated tropical drink, but the Rum Punch does deserve a closer look. Therefore, I came up with my own version. I actually mixed this drink back in 2022. This means, I am diving deep into the recipe backlog here.
The idea for the Rum Punch came from a ‘Burn Notice’ episode. I have to admit that the series was not the best, but it was entertaining. On top of that, I had just made raisins from red grapes grown by my in-laws. Put this together with the basic Rum Punch recipe from Difford’s Guide and you get a tasty and relatively easy-to-make tropical cocktail.
Two overproof rums
Since the base for the raisin infused rum was the overproof Plantation O.F.T.D., I paired it with another strong rum staple, the Wray & Nephew White Overproof. Apart from that, tea bitters seem to work perfectly with sugarcane spirits and so I added a healthy dash, too. The sweet-and-sour base consists of lime juice and dark Muscovado simple syrup.
1,5 cl Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum
2 Dashes Dashfire Chai Bitters
1 Dash Angostura Bitters
3 cl Lime Juice
2 cl Muscovado Simple Syrup
6 cl Chilled Water
Garnish: Dried Lime Wheel;
Song: Júníus Mayvant – Punch Through The Night;
*Slice a hand-full of red grapes in half – remove as much seeds as possible – put on dehydrator for at least 12 h on 60 °C – add raisins to 250 ml Plantation O.F.T.D. rum – infuse for five days – strain – bottle in clean bottle.
Obviously, the Rum Punch delivers a healthy dose of rum with ester notes at the front. Afterwards, dried fruit notes and the sweet and sour mix take over. The chai bitters work very well with the rum and raisin notes. All in all, this is an easy, but still complex tropical drink.
