Tropical Month 2023 – Devil Like Me

On with Tropical Month 2023, the ‘Devil Like Me’ is a variation of another drink I created in 2017. The ‘Balthazar Impresario’ is a rare tropical cocktail that uses vermouth. On top of that, both drinks show my love for blood oranges.

The ‘Balthazar Impresario’ actually is one of the drinks I am most happy with. So, it just was a matter of time until I came up with a variation. I kept the sweet vermouth and blood orange juice and changed almost everything else! However, I also added a healthy dose of Jamaica style rum to the recipe.

Brandy and Amaro

Actually, my goal with the ‘Devil Like Me’ was to come up with a similar layered and spicy taste, but without the trouble of making Chai infused vermouth. On top of that, I wanted to add a splash of citrus to balance out the drink.- Depending on the blood oranges, the ‘Balthazar’ leans a bit to the sweet side. So, I replaced some part of the rum with brandy and Amaro. I also switched out the rum liqueur for an Italian almond flavoured one and added a some bergamot bitters.

3 cl Kill Devil Navy Style Rum
1,5 cl Monteru Merlot Brandy
1,5 cl Silvio Carta Bomba Amaro
1,5 cl Nardini Mandorla Liqueur
4 Sprays The Seventh Sense Bergamott Bitters
2,25 cl House Vermouth Blend*
2,25 cl Lime Juice
2,25 cl Blood Orange Juice
1,5 cl Homemade Spice Syrup
Shake – strain – chilled Tropical glass over ice cubes;
Garnish: Orange Twist – Lime Twist;
Song: Rainbow Kitten Surprise – Devil Like Me;

*Mix 50 % Mancino Vermouth Rosso, 40 % Yzaguierre Reserve and 10 % Manino Chinato.

The ‘Devil Like Me’ really comes off as being more balanced than the original. At the same time, you also get the same flavour combination of rum, sweet vermouth and blood oranges. Yet, while the drink tricks you into thinking it is relatively harmless, it packs quite the punch!
