Homebar Awards 02/23 – Wings of Love

A short break from Tropical Month 2023 for this month’s Home Bar Awards challenge and Soundtrack My Friend’s Drink Vol. 13. Just in time for Valentine’s Day the task was to draw inspiration from a love or heartbreak song. In this case, I chose the song ‘Wings of Love’ from the supergroup LIV.

LIV is comprised of Lykke Li, Jeff Bhasker, Andrew Wyatt, Pontus Winnberg, and Björn Yttling. While Liv describe the song ‘Wings of Love’ of actually being about the fading summer, the lyrics alone also work as a love song. On top of that, this also gave me the idea to come up with a Aviation variation.

A stirred Sour

Instead of gin, I went with a split base between wild apricot eau de vie and mezcal. Instead of Marschino I just used cherry bitters. To better suit the whole Valentines theme, I replaced the violet liqueur with rose liqueur. Furthermore, I also went with apple Verjus instead of lemon juice. This also meant that I could stir the cocktail.

Wings of Love:
View in: de en
3 cl Haas Wild Apricot Eau de Vie
3 cl Del Maguey Chichicapa Mezcal
2 Dashes Bonplant Cherry & Pinot Noir Bitters
1 cl Rose Liqueur
2,25 cl Apple Verjus
0,75 cl Simple Syrup
Stir – strain – chilled Cocktail glass;
Garnish: Lemon Twist;
Song: LIV – Wings of Love;

The first thing you notice is the smoke of the mezcal. Soon afterwards, the combination of apple and roses hits your palate. Next, the apricot eau de vie shines through. All in all, the smoke clearly dominates the sip, but nevertheless the drink is well balanced and a special Valentine’s treat.
