Unbottled – Maximin Gruenhaus Abtsberg Kabinett

I discovered that I really do enjoy riesling wines from Maximin Gruenhaus a few years back. So, I went for a bottle of Abtsberg Kabinett. When it comes to the (sub-)region Ruwer itself, it gets a bit complicated.

Since 1998 the Ruwer is a subregion of the Moselle wine region. The Moselle region itself was named ‘Moselle-Saar-Ruwer’. I already visited the Saar twice and therefore wanted to include it separately and it was only fair to do the same with the Ruwer.

Sweet, ripe fruits and acidity

The Abtsberg Kabinett starts with classic residual sweet riesling flavours reminding me of golden raisins and petrol. Yet, behind those obvious flavours I also found bee’s wax, green apples, candied lemons as well as slate. Towards the after taste exotic fruits emerge. All in all, this wine is quite the crowd pleaser.

Cliché pairing

For a food pairing I went for an easy prep version of Pho ga with chicken. The combination of hot, fat, herbs and spices was the perfect match with the Kabinett. I know, the pairing is a bit on the nose, but sweet riesling and Asian food just work so well together.
