Cucurucu – Plantation Australia 2007

Plantation Rum recently introduced a one of limited edition line. So, this time I had the chance to try the new Australia 2007 bottling. The rum just seemed perfect for another Jungle Bird variation. In addition, I used a red vineyard peach eau de vie in the recipe, too.

The Beenleigh Artisan Distillery produces the base for the Plantation Australia 2007 One-Time Limited Edition. After a twelve-day fermentation process with two yeasts Schizosaccharomyces pombe and Saccharomy-ces cerevisiae, the molasses mash is distilled on pot-stills. The rum ages thirteen years in 200 l ex-Bourbon casks with an additional one-year ageing period in 350 l Ferrand casks. In the end, the rum is bottled with 49,3 % ABV without any dosage.

Szechuan pepper and spices

There are a lot of ester notes in the rum. However, they remind me more of rum from Fiji. On top of that, the rum is very powerful. Not only because of its ABV, but also because the rum has quite some Szechuan pepper notes and tannins. Furthermore, you will find a lot of backing spices in the taste. Probably, you need a bit of water when trying the rum on its own.

Another bird

For a drink with the Plantation Australia Rum, I chose a Jungle Bird variation. However, I added a splash of peach eau de vie from Tinnauer which has clear peach notes with some perfumed flavours. Instead of Campari, I used the Rinomato Bitter Scuro. Apart from that, I kept the original recipe.

Cucurucu:
View in: de en
4,5 cl Plantation Australia 2007 Rum
1,5 cl Tinnauer Peach Eau de Vie
2,25 cl Rinomato Bitter
4,5 cl Pineapple Juice
2,25 cl Lime Juice
1,5 cl Palm’s Palm Syrup
Shake – strain – chilled Tiki glass over crushed ice;
Garnish: Mint Sprig;
Song: Nick Mulvey – Cucurucu;

The “Cucurucu” starts with typical Jungle Bird flavours. However, the peach eau de vie provides more fruity notes which go very well with the pineapple flavours. The Rinomato Bitter also brings additional berry notes to the mix. In the end, the drink is a great summery, tropical cocktail.

*The fact that I received a product reviewed in this article for free, did not – in any way – influence the rating of said product. The rum was provided by Ferrand Spirits and the eau de vie by Tinnauer.
