Quartz – 1783 Barbados Rum

I have to admit that I only discovered the joys of rum from the Foursquare distillery at the beginning of this year. On top of that, it took me far too long to review another bottling here on the blog. This time, the independent bottler 1731 bottles an eight-year-old rum from the distillery in Barbados. For a drink, I came up with a tropical drink using ginger liqueur and passion fruit.

1731 as an independent rum bottler offers both, regional blends and single origin rums. The latter is true of this eight-year-old rum. The rum is distilled from molasses on column and pot stills in the Foursquare distillery. Richard Seale uses bourbon barrels for the ageing of rum blend. The rum then spends eight years in Barbados before being bottled by 1731 in the Netherlands without chill-filtration and no additional colouring.

Coconuts, again

Similar to the Sixty-Six Cask Strength Rum, the 1731 offers rich coconut flavours in the bouquet and the taste. Additionally, you can find typical molasses rum based flavours with a bunch of spices in the sip. Towards the aftertaste, the 1731 eight-year-old shows a few grassy notes with a hint of charcoal. All in all, the 1731 is mellower than its cask strength sibling, but at the same time offers beautiful rum flavours without any additives

Hurricanesque drink

I cannot really tell you which drink influenced the “Quartz” cocktail in the end. Somehow, I think it was a cocktail from Servedbysoberon, but at the same time the drink also bears resemblance with a Hurricane. To add a bit more power to the taste, I added a bit of Plantation O.F.T.D. The ginger liqueur adds a bit of heat and a splash of orange juice balances out the cocktail.

Quartz:

4,5 cl 1783 Barbados Rum
1,5 cl Plantation O.F.T.D.
0,75 cl Giffard Ginger Liqueur
3 cl Lime Juice
3 cl Orange Juice
2,25 cl d’Arbo Passionfruit & Orange Syrup
Shake – strain – chilled tropical glass over crushed ice;
Garnish: Dried Dragonfruit Wheel;
Song: TV on the Radio – Quartz;

The drink starts off with a combination of molasses rum as well as some passion fruit notes. The coconut flavor of the 1731 Rum shines through nicely. Then the ginger kicks in and adds a bit of complexity. In the end, the orange juice smooths out the drink and make it quite sipable.
