Apples – Tinnauer Apfelstrudellikör

I guess it is kind of a new trend to come up with cake or dessert flavoured liqueurs. In this case, I got a surprise sample of apple strudel liqueur from the Tinnauer Distillery. Inspired by a drink from Cocktailbart, I decided to mix up an apple flavoured sour style cocktail.

Apple strudel might just be the most famous Austrian sweet dessert, besides “Kaiserschmarrn”. The Tinnauer Distillery came up with the idea of transferring those familiar flavours to a liqueur. So, the Tinnauer Apfelstrudel liqueur uses an apple eau de vie in combination with a spice extraction. Furthermore, the liqueur is a bit cloudy with an ABV of 23 %.

Liquid dessert

The liqueur instantly transfers you to an Austrian style dinner. You taste raisins, cinnamon, vanilla and, of course apples. The sweetness also is noticeable, but does not overwhelm the taste. Obviously, the flavours work perfectly with each other and in the aftertaste you also get a hint of almonds. All in all, I enjoyed the Apfelstrudel Liqueur very much, especially because of its natural cinnamon flavour.

More apple strudel!

For a drink I based my recipe on Johann’s Apple Pie Sour, because a sour style drink just seemed like the obvious choice. In the end, I combined calvados, the apple strudel liqueur and bitters with maple syrup. To be honest, I only used a combination of lemon and orange juice, because I ran out of lemons. However, the combination worked and the orange juice made the drink even smoother. To give the drink a silky mouthfeel, I added a bit of Aqua Faba, although it did not foam as well as with other drinks.

Apples:

3 cl Chateau de Couqurel V.S.O.P
3 cl Tinnauer Apfelstrudel Liqueur
2 Dashes Fee Brother’s Whisky Barrel Aged Bitters
2,25 cl Lemon Juice
1,5 cl Orange Juice
2 cl Maple Syrup
1,5 cl Aqua Faba
Shake with ice – strain – second shaker – shake again  – fill Double Old-Fashioned glass over ice cubes;
Garnish: Dried Apple Wheel;
Song: Efterklang – Apples;

The drink starts off with a clear apple brandy flavour. However, the next thing you will notice is a distinct cinnamon note from the liqueur an the bitters. The Aqua Faba lends the drink a great creaminess. Obviously, the maple syrup works perfectly with the other apple flavours. In conclusion, the “Apples” is a great choice for warmer days, but also suitable for winter for a pairing with an apple strudel.
