Purple Yellow Red & Blue – Fischer Gin

I guess every new gin needs to have a special colour now. However, there are still great gins out there to discover. Especially, if it is a local one. In this case the Ocean Gin comes from the renown vineyard and distillery Fischer.

The Fischer Ocean Gin uses sixteen botanicals. Besides juniper, they are lemons, lime blossoms, rosemary, basil, olives, black pepper, grains of paradise, lavender, cucumber, ginger, nutmeg, angelica, coriander, and cinnamon. On top of that, the butterfly pea flower gives the gin its beautiful dark blue colour. In the end, Fischer rests their gin in oak barrels and bottles it at an ABV of 44 %.

Classic juniper with something extra

The Ocean Gin starts with classic juniper flavours and some effervescent notes. Yet, after a while you can notice citrus notes which reminded me of lemon eau de vie and bitter oranges. Towards the end of the gin’s taste I also found a flavour reminiscent of hazelnuts which was new for me.

Frozen Purple Negroni

Well, sometimes when I read something on Punch Drink I instantly have to try it. (Which does not mean that I also find the time to write about it straight away.) This also was the case with cocktails from the freezer and how to use the prebatch drink as an ingredient itself. In this case, I premixed the regular Negroni part of the drink, bottled it and put it in the freezer. When making the drink, I just added the chamomile tea to the glass, added the prebatch Negroni. To keep in line with the name of the drink I also added a bit of Campari – for the red colour – and a yellow lemon twist.

First of all, the Fischer Ocean Gin makes an hell of a Negroni. Second, “freezing” your Negroni gives the drink a silky, smooth mouthfeel. Paired with the tea for a bit of watering down and some additional bitter notes, this makes for an addictive combination. I guess, I will be freezing more drinks for now on!
