Challengers – Giffard Passionfruit

The combination of passion fruit and vanilla is a great one – exhibit A: the P***star Martini. However, you can also easily use the flavours in a sour style cocktail like Empire Brick of Gin did. Basically, I just made a riff on the original recipe, but used a split of base spirits. At least one of them you would not have guessed!

For the passionfruit flavour part, I used a liqueur from Giffard. The Crème de Fruits de la Passion uses concentrated passionfruit juice. Since it is a crème liqueur it has a high sugar content of at least 400 g per litre. At the same time, the ABV is relatively low with 16 %.

Tequila and grapes

When it comes to the Sour, I took a look in my Flavor Bible for flavours working with passion fruit. In the end, I came up with a split base between Reposado tequila and aged grappa. Apart from that, I kept it relatively simple.

Challengers:
View in: de en
3 cl Monte Sabotino Grappa Stravecchia
3 cl Calle 23 Reposado Tequila
1,5 cl Giffard Passionfruit Liqueur
3 cl Lime Juice
2 cl Homemade Vanilla Syrup
Shake – strain – chilled Double Old-Fashioned glass over ice cubes;
Garnish: Lime Twist;
Song: The New P****graphers – Challengers;

Despite the lack of chocolaty ingredients, the “Challengers” has a weird chocolate note which I guess comes from the combination of aged grappa and tequila as well as the vanilla syrup. Apart from that, you can notice the passionfruit notes balanced by the lime juice. I guess it could not hurt to incorporate a fresh passion fruit as well, but the drink is already quite tasty.

*The fact that I received a product reviewed in this article for free, did not – in any way – influence the rating of said product. The liqueur was provided by Giffard.
