The Next Level of Homemade Drinks

Human Nature – Sir Edmond Gin

There have been a lot articles on wine here in the past few weeks. So, I thought I would throw in a cocktail for a change. On top of that, I had a new gin on hand. I based the whole drink on the White Enzoni and therefore stuck with the wine theme for a little while longer.

Sir Edmond Gin is produced at the Herman Jansen in Schiedam, Netherlands. The botanicals angelica root, cardamom, cinnamon, juniper and ginger are vapour distilled in two separate pot-stills. Moreover, Sir Edmond’s cuts Bourbon vanilla beans by hand and infuses them in neutral grain alcohol for six to eight weeks. All three spirits are then blended and rested for a week.

Vanilla and juniper

When trying the gin, the vanilla note comes through right from the start. On top of that, there are the usual gin flavours of juniper and earthy spices. At the end of the taste, you can notice a note reminiscent of sweetness.

White Enzoni base

Back in 2020 I made an Enzoni variation using gentian liqueur instead of Campari. I used this recipe as a base here. Yet instead of white grapes or grape juice, I used the Silvaner from Stephan Kraemer. Furthermore, I added a dash of Ms Better Bitters Pineapple Star Anise Bitters.

Human Nature:
View in: de en
3 cl Sir Edmond Gin
2,25 cl Chartreuse Gentiane
3 cl Kraemer Silvaner 2017
3 cl Lemon Juice
3 cl Giffard Gomme Syrup
Shake – strain – chilled Old-Fashioned glass over ice cubes;
Garnish: Lemon Twist (no drop);
Song: Caught a Ghost – Human Nature;

The ‘Human Nature’ starts with a combination of vanilla and Gin Sour notes. Yet, you can also find some fruity grape notes. The bitters linger on in the back and they enhance the fruitiness of the Silvaner. You will notice some sweetness, but they are balanced by the acidity of the lemon juice as well as the wine. In the end, the cocktail is quite complex, but also very drinkable.
