Senza Spritz – Mondino Senza

After gin and vermouth, clearly the next trend are non-alcoholic “spirits”. I still have not found a good way of describing this category, because strictly speaking they are not “spirits”. However, until now I have only tried non-alcoholic “gins” which should only enjoyed mixed. The Mondino Senza changes that! I can tell you right away, that it is even tasty on its own.

I am already in love with the regular Mondino Aperitivos. The Amaros from the Schnitzer Distillery are beautifully balanced with not too much bitterness, on top of that they also use organic ingredients. The Senza however, is a combination of different fruit juices, cranberry, lemon and elderberries, essences from fruits and spices, natural blackcurrant flavouring, and beet sugar.

Fruity, bitter and aromatic

As mentioned above, the Mondino Senza is delicious on its own. It reminds me of a slightly bitter juice. Apart from that, you can taste certain spice and herbal notes besides the blackcurrant and sour cherry flavour. The bitterness is well integrated and also accompanied by a certain acidity. All in all, I enjoyed the Senza very much and it is a nice non-alcoholic apéritif addition. Moreover, Mondino suggests mixing a Senza Tonic with their apéritif. Of course, I had to try it. Yet, because the Senza already has some sweetness, I went for the Schweppes Dry Tonic Water. The resulting drink is very refreshing with a noticeable, but pleasant bitterness.

Drinking without a guilty conscience

I guess it is pretty obvious to mix up a “Spritz” style cocktail with the alcohol-free Mondino Aperitivo. So, I did just that. However, instead of going for a non-alcoholic sparkling wine, I chose a delicious fruit secco from Joerg Geiger. It almost does not matter which variety you choose from the PriSecco line-up, in this case I used the “Spring Scent”. Built the drink on ice cubes, add a little soda water and you are done. Similar to the “Senza & Tonic”, the “Senza Spritz” is very refreshing without the weight of the alcohol. At the same time, the drink does not feel like “just” sipping juice.
