Cocoon – Aluna Coconut Rum

I already featured the Aluna Coconut Rum here on the blog. However, German importer Perola is hosting a cocktail competition and I thought I have a go at it. Basically, the rules are simple, the drink has to have at least three ingredients and include at least 2 cl Aluna Coconut. All in all, I went with a kind of Mai Tai variation using beet root eau de vie.

Basically a Mai Tai

For inspiration I used the Flavour Thesaurus and it turns out that beetroots go well with coconuts. Furthermore, my Flavour Bible said to pair coconuts with orange liqueur. On top of that, it also does not come as a surprise that almonds go well with coconuts. This way I ended up with creating a Mai Tai variation. Instead of the usual rum combination, I went for the Aluna Coconut and paired it with the Faude Beetroot Eau de Vie. Apart from that, I kept the rest of the recipe unchanged, but topped the whole thing up with healthy dashes of Angostura Bitters. Garnish everything with a dried Dragoon Fruit wheel and you have yourself an excellent tropical cocktail.

Cocoon:

5 cl Aluna Coconut Rum
1,5 cl Faude Beet Root Eau de Vie
1,5 cl Pierre Ferrand Orange Curacao
3 cl Lime Juice
2,25 cl Meneau Orgeat
Top off with 4 Dashes Angostura Bitters
Shake over ice cubes – strain Tropical glass over crushed ice – top off with bitters;
Garnish: Dried Dragon Fruit Wheel;
Song: Stu Larsen – Cocoon;

The “Cocoon” start off with exotic rum and fruit flavours. However, after a short while the earthy notes of the beetroot eau de vie kick in. Additionally, they nicely balance out the exotic notes of the drink. Apart from that, the cocktail stays very refreshing and the tropical combination of the Aluna Coconut Rum with curacao and orgeat is just perfect for sunny days.

*The fact that I received a product reviewed in this article for free, did not – in any way – influence the rating of said product. The rum was provided by Perola.
