Feel Good – Douglas Laing The Gauldrons

I am a big fan of Douglas Lang Regional Malt’s series. However, there was one standard edition missing. The Gauldrons blended malt whisky consists of different single malts from Campbeltown. This rather unique and almost underappreciated Scottish whisky region was once the whisky capital of the world. However, today only three distilleries remain. When it comes to mixing a drink with it, a lucky accident helped to come up with a tasty after dinner cocktail.

First, on to the whisky: As mentioned only three distilleries, Glen Scotia, Glengyle and Springbank remain in the whisky region of Campbeltown. Douglas Laing uses the “finest” single malts from the region. Furthermore, the whisky is bottled without chill-filtration and without additional colouring.

Peat smoke and fruits

In the line of other Campbeltown malts I already tried, the Gauldrons blended malt comes off as a weird mix of flavours. On the on hand, you get peat smoke notes reminiscent of Islay whisky. On the other, you can find sweet and fruity notes similar to sherry cask aged Lowland malts in the taste. Do not get me wrong, I enjoyed the whisky very much, I am just saying that it is different than your usual blended Scotch. Yet, the value of this whisky lies precisely in the fact that it is a mix of flavours. All in all, I highly recommend this blend from Douglas Laing, if you are into slightly peated and complex whiskies.

A lucky accident

My first plan was to create a tropical cocktail with the rum, whisky, Amaro, lemon and crème of coconut. However, when I started mixing the drink, I forgot to add the lemon juice. When considering re-mixing the cocktail the way I indented it to be, I tried the cocktail and was positively surprised. The combination of spirits, Amer Picon and crème of coconut makes for a great After Dinner style cocktail.

Feel Good:

4,5 cl 1731 Barbados Rum
1,5 cl Douglas Laing The Gauldrons Blended Malt
0,75 cl Ascaim Cacao Eau de Vie
3 cl Picon Amer
3 cl Cream of Coconut
Shake – strain – chilled Cocktail glass;
Garnish: Grated Nutmeg;
Song: Chet Faker – Feel Good;

The “Feel Good” combines coconut flavours with rum notes and a hint of peat smoke. Furthermore, the cacao eau de vie works perfectly well with the coconut flavours. On top of that, the mouthfeel and consistency of the cocktail is great and perfect for an After Dinner drink. In the end, I enjoyed the cocktail very much and did not think twice about remixing it with the lemon juice.
