Soundtrack my Friends Drink – Nowhere Inn
I am really excited to take part in Sound Track My Drink’s #SoundtrackMyFriendsDrink for the first time. This time it is all about movie and tv show soundtracks. So, I got @Drink_lv pick, St. Vincent’s Nowhere Inn as a song. I was more than happy to come up with a drink for that song / movie. In the end, I found a way to incorporate the weird vibe of the song and the movie.
First, I thought that a drink about a “Nowhere Inn” should include some cider. However, I still needed a drink template to base my creation on. In the song, there is a reverence to an labyrinth. As it turns out, there is a drink called “Labyrinth” using rye, amaretto, oloroso sherry and bitters.
Replaced all the ingredients
As per usual, I took the basic proportions of the original recipe and then changed everything else… I kind of felt that an Inn would serve “reasonably” priced spirits. Therefore, I chose the Evan Williams Bottle In Bond in combination with the Daron Fine Calvados. Instead of Oloroso sherry, I emphasized the apple notes with some apple ice wine. However, the drink still was missing a heavy dose of weirdness. I thought a splash of Fernet and a spray of absinthe would do the trick!
3 cl Daron Fine Calvados
1,5 cl Krenzer Apple Icewine
0,75 cl Luxardo Fernet
0,75 cl Simple Syrup
2 Sprays Absinthe Mix
Stir – strain – chilled Cocktail glass;
Garnish: Lemon Twist;
Song: St. Vincent – Nowhere Inn;
I know, St. Vincent mentions gin in the lyrics of the song. However, by the time I realized that, I had already mixed the drink and I enjoyed it very much. You get a lot of apple notes from the first sip. Yet, after a short while the herbal and spicy notes of the absinth, Fernet and bitters shine through. The bourbon somehow lingers on in the back and adds to the complexity. All in all, the “Nowhere Inn” turned out, neither too Fernet heavy nor too bitter. If you must you could add in a splash of gin just to spike up the weirdness even more!
