SMFD – Beautiful Disaster

It is time for Soundtrack my Friend’s Drink again! For Volume 14 Adam collected song suggestions reminding us of our youth and randomly assigned them to another participant. In addition, we should include a childhood snack in the drink or as a garnish. So, I went for a high school party inspired mess of ingredients.

My song came from John who has an awesome Instagram page. He chose ‘Beautiful Disaster’ by 311, because his high school band covered it. This inspired me to serve the drink in a glass recreation of the famous red plastic cup. Furthermore, I just went full ‘high schooler raids his mom’s / dad’s liqueur cabinet and throws the weirdest bottles she / he can find together’*. However, the initial idea and base for the recipe came from Frederic Yarm’s ‘All of Freud’s Beautiful Women’.

Jamaican rum and Mezcal

Well, I am not a music expert, but I got a ska vibe from the song and therefore went with Smith & Cross as the first ingredient. On top of that, I thought Mezcal really is a great ‘disaster’ spirit, because it really can mess you up… The paprika eau de vie just was an obvious choice after that. It really goes very well with agave spirits and mezcal in particular. In the end, I kept the Amaro Montenegro of the original recipe, because I know Adam loves it. Yet, I decided to turn the recipe into a highball to better suit the ‘high school’ theme.

Beautiful Disaster:
View in: de en
1,5 cl Smith & Cross Jamaica Rum
1,5 cl Del Maguey Chichicapa Mezcal
1,5 cl Hiebl Paprila Eau de Vie
1,5 cl Amaro Montenegro
2 Dashes Bob’s Coriander Bitters
2 Dashes Scrappy’s Lime Bitters
1,5 cl Lemon Juice
1,5 cl Honey Mix Syrup
Top off with Soda Water
Shake – strain – chilled Highball glass over ice cubes – top off with Soda Water;
Garnish: Lemon Half – Kit Kat Chunky (by the side);
Song: 311 – Beautiful Disaster;

Less wild flavours than I thought

Actually, I thought that the drink would turn out more of a ‘beautiful’ mess as it did. Yes, you clearly notice the paprika eau de vie, but it blends in very well with the other ingredients. Somehow, the Jamaica rum and the mezcal balance each other out and the Monte, the lemon juice and the honey really work wonders in making this combination almost an ‘easy sipper’. Actually, I wanted to include a ‘Milky Way’ (Mars bar in the US) as a garnish, but my local supermarket out listed it, soi I went with Kit Kat another heavily consumed chocolate bar back in the days.

*Obviously, I do not suggest in any way that a minor should consume alcohol!.
