Tropical Month 2024 – Gold Canary

Yes, I know, this article is about another Jungle Bird variation. I just cannot help it, this is where my mind goes when I think about cocktails inspired by bird related songs. Yet, to differentiate the recipe more from my other version this tropical month, I turned this one into a milk punch.
The base for the ‘Gold Canary’ was the idea to combine the White Negroni with a Jungle Bird. This resulted in me using a combination of two ‘white’ bitter / aperitif liqueurs. Instead of just Jamaica Rum, I also added some unaged Arrak.
Smooth and milky
When it comes to the rest of the recipe, I added the excellent Ms Better Bitters Pineapple & Star Anise bitters. – This seemed like an obvious choice. Yet, I left the backbone of the recipe unchanged. After stirring all the ingredients together, I poured the mix in some whole milk. After the curdling set in, I strained the mixture twice through the same coffee filter. This takes ages, but results in a clearer drink.

3 cl By the Dutch Arrak White
1,5 cl Etna Twist Aperitivo
1,5 cl Luxardo Bitter Bianco
2 Dashes Ms Better Bitters Pineapple & Star Anise Bitters
4,5 cl Pineapple Juice
1,5 cl Lime Juice
1,5 cl Simple Syrup
6 cl Whole Milk
Garnish: Lime Twist;
Song: Cloud Control – Gold Canary;

Typically for a milk punch, the flavours of the individual ingredients get blended together and mellowed a bit. You can taste some rum and pineapple flavour. Additionally, the bitter notes of the Luxardo and the Etna Aperitivo shine through after a while. The Arrak also adds some more complexity.
