Beergarita – Gänstaller Amarillo Beer

The “Amarillo” was the next beer I tried from the Gänstaller Braumanufaktur. This double beer is inspired by Bamberg’s bock beer and uses Amarillo hops. Since, the flavour profile reminded me a bit of exotic fruits, I decided to mix up a Beergarita with it.

Similar to their other beers, Gänstaller produces classic beer styles, but gives them a modern twist. In this case, they took the traditional Franconian bock beer and added flavour-full Amarillo hops to the recipe. In the end, the beer has an ABV of 7 % and 48 International Bitter Units.
Exotic fruit notes

Interestingly enough, the “Amarillo” beer not only carries citrus notes in its bouquet. Instead, the Amarillo hops also incorporate a clear mango aroma. Nevertheless, the taste delivers the familiar citrusy hoppy flavours. The bitterness is noticeable, but not overwhelming. Additionally, you also get the typical sweetness of Bock beers and a hint of wheat.
Tequila and Amarillo hops

It was a spontaneous decision to add the “Amarillo” beer to a Tommy’s Margarita. I guess, there are a number of “Beergarita” recipes out there, but I did not look them up and instead improvised. On top of that, I used a high-proof tequila and therefore adapted the proportions of the drink to that, too. In the end, I could not resist and added a bit of chili essence to the mix.

1,5 cl Lime Juice
0,75 cl Agave Syrup
Top off with Gänstaller Amarillo Beer
Shake – strain – chilled Margarita glass – top off with beer;
Garnish: Lime Twist;
Song: Calexico – Under the Wheel;
The “Beergarita” starts with clear Margarita notes of tequila and lime. However, after a short while the flavours of the beer kick in. As planned, the fruity hop notes work very well in combination with the agave flavours. Obviously, you have to be a fan of beer drinks and tequila to enjoy this drink. Yet, I guess the beer even makes the drink a bit more approachable than a regular Margarita.
