Various Storms & Saints – Aloha Fassionola

Usually, I am pretty savvy when it comes to classic cocktails. On top of that, I also know a fair share of obscure ingredients. However, until last year I had never heard about Fassionola and that it was used in the “original” Hurricane cocktail! Yet, this gave me the perfect excuse to try the first available version for Tropical Month 2023.

The Aloha Fassionola comes from the folks behind Old Judge Spirits. They have quite the experience with tropical ingredients since they also make Falernum. For their Fassionola liqueur they use hibiscus flowers, passionfruit as well as pineapples. In the end, the liqueur is bottled at 14 % ABV.

Hibiscus and passionfruit

The Ahloha Fassionola starts with a clear passionfruit taste which are accompanied by some hibiscus flavours. Apart from that the liqueur reminded me of citrus flavoured sweets with some exotic notes. There is some acidity, but I guess the real power of the Fassionola lies in being mixed.

A Hurricane variation

Obviously, there only was one choice of drink I could make with the Aloha Fassionola. However, I guess I straited quite a bit from the original. Therefore, I gave it another name. So the name I chose gave me the idea of using a bit of Benedictine in the mix. Apart from that, I added a mix of Tiki bitters and Scrappy’s Firewater Tincture to spice things up.

Various Storms & Saints:

4,5 cl Kill Devil Navy Style Rum
4,5 cl Dos Maderas 5 + 5 Rum
2,25 cl Aloha Fassionola
1 Bsp. Benedictine
3 Sprays The Seventh Sense Tiki Bitters
1 Dash Scrappy’s Firewater Tincture
4,5 cl Lime Juice
2,25 cl d’Arbo Passionfruit & Orange Syrup
0,75 cl Simple Syrup
Shake – fill – tropical glass with a few extra ice cubes;
Garnish: Lemon Twists – Brandied Cherries;
Song: Florence + The Machine – Various Storms & Saints;

At first you think you are sipping the regular flavour combination of passionfruit, lime and rum. However, after a short while the hibiscus notes shine through. On top of that, there is some orange oil in the taste as well. All in all, the ‘Various Storms & Saints’ was a delicious tropical cocktail!
